75 years of Jaguar history brought to life
-27 September 2010

The 23rd September 2010 marks the 75th anniversary of the Jaguar marque.

To mark the occasion, a group of 75 individually-numbered, iconic Jaguars from across the years made a two-day journey from Coventry to Goodwood. This exclusive celebration drive, starting in Coventry on 17th September, took place in London’s May Fair hotel – site of the original Jaguar model launch in 1935 – and finished at the UK’s largest heritage motor festival, the Goodwood Revival on Saturday 18th.

Most cars were privately-owned examples, driven by their owners, joined by some of the most famous cars from Jaguar’s own heritage collection, including the E-Type, C-Type, pre-war SS Jaguar saloons and a selection of its latest models.

Launched to coincide with the drive, an iPhone and iPad app charting the 75 years of the British marque’s history is available to download now by searching ‘Jaguar 75’ in iTunes.
This 'Jaguar 75' app pulls together a host of materials that tell the company’s story of making beautiful fast cars over the past 75 years through the people and machines that have made it a British motoring icon – including the SS 2.5-litre Saloon, XK120, C-Type, D-Type, XKSS, MKII, E-Type, XJ13, XJ6, XJ-S, XJR-9, XJ220, XK8, XK, XF and XJ.
Our favourite top facts include:

1) When the first ever Jaguar was revealed, Sir William Lyons (founder of Jaguar Cars) asked guests of the launch event to speculate on how much the SS Jaguar 2.5 Litre Saloon would cost. The average guess was £632. In fact, the handsome, luxurious machine cost a mere £385.

2) For the 1938 British Motor Show, Lyons penned a coupé version of the SS100. With beautiful sweeping curves and Art Deco detailing it proved a sensation but sadly, with the outbreak of war the following year, the show car was the only one ever built.

3) At Le Mans in 1953 Jaguar C-Types finished 1st, 2nd and 4th. The company sent a telegram to the Queen, dedicating its win to her, in her coronation year, and received a congratulatory reply from Her Majesty.

4) Of the 16 XKSS vehicles produced, one was bought by actor and racing driver Steve McQueen, who kept it for 10 years before selling it on. Of all his cars it was possibly the one he enjoyed a little too much for it netted him two driving bans. However, clearly regretting his decision, McQueen later bought the car back and owned it until his death.

5) Enzo Ferrari proclaimed the E-Type to be “the most beautiful car ever built” on first sight of it, while America’s Road & Track magazine reported it as, in the unreconstructed language of the era, “the greatest crumpet collector known to man.”

6) The XJ220 was developed by an informal group of Jaguar employees known as the ‘Saturday Club’ who, as the name suggests, dedicated their spare time to special projects.

7) Lyons’ daughter, Pat, was the co-driver of ‘NUB 120’ the most famous competition XK120. Her husband Ian Appleyard drove it to three Alpine Cup victories and two RAC Rally wins.

8) The introduction of disc brakes was thanks to Jaguar. They were first fitted to the C-Type raced by Stirling Moss and Norman Dewis in the 1952 Mille Miglia. Italian race officials were mystified by the new technology and demanded a demonstration to prove it was in fact a brake and not some illegal addition.

9) In his teens, Ian Callum, Jaguar’s current Design Director, wrote to Bill Heynes (then Chief Engineer) enclosing some of his own designs for a Jaguar. Heynes kindly replied, suggesting to Callum that to pursue his chosen career, he should learn engineering draughtsmanship and study industrial design.

10) The fastest ever Jaguar was a slightly modified production XFR that achieved 225.675mph at the Bonneville Salt flats in November 2009.

New Range Rover Evoque Global Unveil Excites Fans On and Offline
-15 August 2010

The official unveiling of the all-new Range Rover Evoque at Kensington Palace in London earlier this month not only signaled a new compact and luxurious model but has also seen the premium brand embrace a unique approach to unveiling its newest family member.

The 40th anniversary of Range Rover and the launch of the new Evoque was broadcast live on the Land Rover Facebook page, while the video was streamed to a further 110 big-name automotive and lifestyle websites across the world.

Combined global viewers exceeded 700,000 when measured the morning after the launch, and tens of thousands more watched on-demand, taking the number of launch party viewers worldwide close to 2 million. Meanwhile, Land Rover’s official YouTube channel was the most viewed channel in the UK on July 2nd.

The incredible online audience witnessed British TV presenter George Lamb, Land Rover Managing Director Phil Popham, Victoria Beckham and Land Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern unveil the new Range Rover Evoque, which will be the most compact and efficient car the company has ever produced when it goes on sale next year.

“It’s vital that we reach the right audience online, and this was a breakthrough way to reveal a breakthrough car,” said Phil Popham, Land Rover Managing Director.

Range Rover’s unique approach will continue on-the-ground with the dispatch of hundreds of ‘undercover’ prototype models around the globe for trial in the toughest climates and conditions.

Land Rover is making no secret of the operation - its design team has fitted ten prototypes with funky camouflage wraps, meant to introduce the new car in ten key cities worldwide.

These unmissable vehicles represent London, New York, Sau Paulo, Paris, Milan, Madrid, Berlin, Sydney, Shanghai and Moscow and will all be spotted testing around the globe. They are just a small proportion of the hundreds of pre-production cars that will be rigorously evaluated over millions of miles to ensure the new Range Rover Evoque surpasses the highest standards of quality and reliability when it goes on sale in summer 2011.

Alongside the 3,500 Land Rover engineers testing the new model, Land Rover is working with 120 unique component suppliers and carrying out in excess of 17,000 individual tests to examine every separate part and system.

Usually prototypes are disguised for discretion, but these ten are supposed to be seen. The funky camouflage imagery is actually a GPS mapping trail of ten key cities for Evoque, with each vehicle saying ‘Hello’ to its city. It signals the eagerly awaited global launch of the new Evoque.

“The development stage is crucial in the year leading up to launching the car.” said Murray Dietsch, Director of Land Rover programmes. “No stone is left unturned, we have a team of experienced and skilled engineers who will work to a tight schedule to ensure we have a top quality vehicle to offer our consumers.”

The new Range Evoque is the smallest, lightest and most efficient model the company has ever offered, and will be sold in 160 markets around the world.

Ian Callum, Jaguar Design Director said: “The new XJ is a thoroughly modern interpretation of the quintessential Jaguar. It is the most emphatic statement yet of Jaguar’s new design direction.”

Distinguished by unique exterior and interior design features, the XJ includes, an innovative new panoramic glass roof, an integral part of the all-new XJ’s design concept, enabling the car to have a lower, more streamlined roofline, while dramatically enhancing the feeling of light and space inside.

Range Rover Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary During Oman’s 40th Renaissance
-26 July 2010

As the Sultanate of Oman celebrates 40 years of the Blessed Renaissance, Range Rover is proud to celebrate the unique milestone of achieving 40 years of high- performance luxury and engineering excellence.

Range Rover and MHD LLC extend their heartiest congratulations to the nation on the occasion of the 40th Renaissance.

One of the most significant vehicles in the history of motoring, the Range Rover was the world's first vehicle as good on-road as off-road. It was the first fully capable luxury 4x4 and was a milestone in the development of the SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle).

  • The Range Rover celebrated its 40th birthday on 17 June 2010
  • The Range Rover was the world's first fully capable luxury 4x4
  • There have been three generations of Range Rover: the original (Classic) in 1970, second-generation (P38a) in 1994 and third-generation (L322) in 2001
  • Second model line – Range Rover Sport – launched in 2005 became Land Rover's biggest selling vehicle worldwide in 2007
  • Third model line to be revealed at Paris Motor Show 2010

Phil Popham, Land Rover Managing Director said "Land Rover has a unique history of product innovation. But the Range Rover probably remains the most historically significant vehicle we have ever launched. It is one of the most important vehicles in the history of motoring."

Said Robin Colgan, Managing Director Land Rover MENA “Range Rover is by far our best selling model in this region – our flagship Range Rover Vogue and Range Rover Sport account for around 80% of our volume and are very popular with ex-pats and local buyers alike. When the Range Rover arrived in the region it was the world's first luxury utility vehicle, and its arrival coincided with the regions first major oil boom, which meant people had the disposable income to purchase a vehicle that was luxurious but could handle the arduous conditions of the Middle East. This established a special relationship between Range Rover and the Middle East and it’s a relationship that endures to this day.”

There have been three generations of Range Rover. The original, now known as the Classic, went on sale in 1970 and continued in production, with numerous upgrades and a multiplicity of variants, for just over 25 years.

The second-generation vehicle, known as the P38a, went on sale in 1994 and was replaced in 2001 by the current model. The continuing success of the Range Rover ensured that other premium makers jumped into the booming luxury SUV market. The latest version has enjoyed higher annual sales than any previous models and continues to be popular around the world. Sold around the world, from London to Los Angeles, Sydney to Shanghai, Turin to Tokyo, the Range Rover remains the ultimate choice for the luxury SUV customer.

"The Range Rover is really four vehicles in one," says managing director Phil Popham. "It's a seven-days-a-week luxury motor car; a leisure vehicle that will range far and wide on the highways and noways of the world; a high performance car for long distance travel; and a working cross-country vehicle."

From princes to politicians, from rock gods to rock climbers, from footballers to farmers, the Range Rover has always appealed to a diverse group of customers.

A second model line, the Range Rover Sport, was launched in 2005, aimed at more sports-oriented driver-focused customers. It has been a great success, and in 2007 was Land Rover's biggest selling vehicle worldwide.

Later this year, a further member of the Range Rover family will be added, taking the portfolio to three model lines. The new vehicle will be smaller, lighter and more fuel efficient, tying in perfectly with the Range Rover brand's commitment to environmental sustainability. Yet it will be no less premium, no less luxurious, and no less special than the other Range Rover models.

Volvo Cars Belgium will enter the new car in the 2010 season of the Belgian Touring Car Series. Volvo fans will not need to wait long to see the latest model in action since the premiere takes place on April 11.

"We are very happy about this development," says Bart Crols, Managing Director at Volvo Cars Belgium. "The all-new Volvo S60 sports sedan is Volvo's most exciting driving experience so far and there is no better way to show this than by bringing it to the race track. Volvo and the all-new S60 have a special place in the people's hearts here as several Volvo models, including the new S60, are built in Belgium at the Volvo Cars Ghent plant."
"the other end of the line" movie but got no time for that ! will probably watch it tonight :D
The new Volvo S60 race car has been developed in record time locally by Volvo's Belgian S60 Racing Team. It has been developed in accordance with the BTCS Silhouette S1 regulations which put a major emphasis on standardised features. All cars must use a tubular chassis, the same type of front and rear suspension and aerodynamics. A uniform type of engine specification is also available but manufacturers are allowed to use own engines.

"It has been a hectic period, but we have received great assistance from Volvo Cars' Motorsport department" says Thomas Neri, Team Manager for the Volvo S60 Racing Team. He continues: "Our main objective is to get up to speed and to compete well in the various heats. Next season we hope to put our own in-house developed engine in the car."

Land Rover LR 4 named best 4X4 at the What Car? Awards 2010
-04 April  2010

The Land Rover LR4, has been crowned 'Best 4x4' at the prestigious What Car? Awards 2010.

Steve Fowler, editor of What Car? said: "Thanks to a recent comprehensive update, the LR4 is shining brighter than ever…..It is its ability to excel at so many different roles that makes it so appealing. As well as offering executive car comfort and MPV practicality, it's still a real go-anywhere off-roader…. When you consider that the LR4 is so many great cars in one, it’s a bargain."

Phil Popham, managing director, Land Rover added: "We are enormously proud to be taking home this accolade for the LR4. The outgoing LR3 won well over 100 awards globally, including the coveted What Car? Car of the Year in 2005. We've found ways, however, to improve almost every aspect of the LR4, resulting in a new supremely capable and premium vehicle."

This award and others in 2009 means that Land Rover moves into the New Year poised for continued success. From the dependable Defender, to the desirable Range Rover, Land Rover has driven through the difficult market conditions of 2009 to achieve 12 months filled with global awards.

The introduction of an updated model line up, featuring numerous new technologies and combined with cleaner yet more powerful engine options, has provided a cross-continental boost for Britain's world-renowned 4x4 brand.

The LR4 continues to lead the field. As well as the What Car best 4x4 award for 2010, it has scooped a variety of prestigious accolades within a few months of going on sale. These include, in the UK, two awards from the Caravan Club, 4x4 Magazine's Car of the Year and the Scottish Car of the Year. Further afield international recognition has been achieved from Spain's Car and Driver – Best 4x4, Autocar China – Best Annual SUV as well as Bloomberg's USA - All-Round SUV of the Year.

Meanwhile Defender's perennial appeal was proven when it won the What Car? 2009 Reader Award as top choice from more than 250 vehicles and significantly, the Range Rover has just been voted the Car of the Decade by www.autocar.co.uk readers. The Range Rover Sport won Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport Readers’ award for the Most Beautiful Car, as did the Range Rover in Car & Driver China. The LR2 did not go without – winning Best Compact SUV from Auto Express and an environmental award from Germany’s Off Road magazine.

“Land Rover's position as a global brand has never been stronger. Our products lead many of the segments in which they are represented, and to win so many awards in not just the UK but as far afield as - Australia, South Africa, China, Iceland, Russia and the USA – is testament to the talents of every vehicle in our range,” continued Phil Popham.

With all the 2010 model year vehicles now in showrooms, and many more exciting developments planned for the future, the year ahead promises to be an equally exciting time for Land Rover & its customers.

JAGUAR – 75 Years Looking Forward
-20  Feb  2010

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Jaguar name, and 75 years of looking forward, designing and building cars that represent the very best of technical innovation, design leadership and sporting success.

Robin Colgan, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Middle East North Africa, said: "In 2010, we celebrate 75 years of designing and building cars that commemorates the art of automobile making. In the Middle East region we celebrate 60 years of successful Jaguar operations that began in Lebanon back in 1950. We're also celebrating the promise of a bright future. In just three years we've completely revitalized the Jaguar line-up with the launch of three beautiful fast cars including the introduction of the all new XJ.

Just a few years ago Jaguar set out to re-make the brand and to revitalize the model range. It started in 2008 with the introduction of the all-new award-winning XF. This four door, five seat car has the looks of a coupe and the heart of a sports car. In 2009 Jaguar re-engineered the XK coupe and convertible, and in the process created one of the world's great grand tourers. And, 2010 sees the beginning of sales of the ground-breaking XJ, which incorporates all of the virtues that make a Jaguar.

Robin Colgan added: "The development of our new range of cars is all part of returning Jaguar to its original modern, sporting heritage that was developed by our founder Sir Williams Lyons.”

Ian Callum, Jaguar Design Director, said: “Jaguar design over the next 75 years must respect and reflect on the past 75 while continuing to push boundaries of technology, luxury and sporting style. Designing cars with a presence that demands a turn of the head and an allure that pulls at the heart has been central to the Jaguar brand throughout the years

"A successful piece of design should stand the test of time, holding it’s own through passing fashions. Jaguar has a range of cars that are as iconic today as they were when launched – testament to Jaguar’s legacy in creating beautiful fast cars.

"Looking at the present with the XK, XF and all-new XJ and with an eye on the future, we will continue to innovate and set the benchmark, not only in automotive design, but in luxury premium design as a whole.”

Sir William Lyons founded Swallow Sidecars in 1922, and went on to create a range of 'SS' branded motorcycle sidecars and automobiles in the 1920s and early 1930s. When it came to the launch of the all-new SS 100 in 1935, Sir William wanted a new and evocative name for his company. After asking his advertising agency for suggestions, Sir William chose 'Jaguar', and the SS 100 model became the world's first Jaguar.

The ‘Jaguar’ name was an ideal choice - it represented the feline grace and elegance, power and agility that set his cars apart. Sir William once said that a car "was the closest thing we can create to something that is alive", a sentiment that has stood the test of time. The new brand name captured the essence of all of the cars created from that point forward.

Sir William once said that a car "was the closest thing we can create to something that is alive", a sentiment that has stood the test of time. The new brand name captured the essence of all of the cars created from that point forward.

Over the years Jaguar has built some of the world's most iconic cars; the XK120, introduced in the late 1940s, was an instant sensation and the most glamorous sports car of the period; the C Type and D Type race cars that followed, dominated motor racing in the 1950s; the E-Type, launched in the heady 1960s, has been called the most beautiful car ever built and it defined a whole generation. Sports cars have always defined Jaguar, but the Company has also built some of the Industry's most memorable sedans, such as the Mark II in the early 1960's and the renowned XJ range.

During the year Jaguar will celebrate our 75th anniversary at some of the world's most glamorous automotive settings, including the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival in the UK; the Concours D’Elegance at Pebble Beach in the US and at the Mille Miglia classic in Italy. Jaguar is also returning to the racetrack with its new JaguarRSR XKR GT2 and will compete in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).

Volvo XC60 named "Family Car of the Year"

- 4  Jan  2010

The Volvo XC60 took first prize in the "Family Car of the Year" category in the first-ever Women's World Car of the Year competition. All told, 21 cars competed in four categories when eight female motoring journalists from seven countries voted for their favourite cars.

"It is naturally immensely gratifying that women appreciate the Volvo XC60 and that our product meets their requirements. With the Volvo XC60 we feel we have truly succeeded in creating a car that appeals to many different customer groups," said Johan Rasmusson, Car Line Manager for the Volvo XC60 and XC90 at Volvo Cars.

Over the past year, eight female motoring journalists from Britain, the USA, Canada, South Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand put 21 selected cars to the test. The group and the award were created to educate the world's car makers about female customers' requirements.

"We searched a long time to put together a team of female motoring correspondents qualified to vote for the winners. This was no easy task since there aren't that many female motoring journalists," said Sandy Myhre, jury chairperson from New Zealand.

All the winners in the four categories were recently presented in London. The Volvo XC60 won the "Family Car of the Year" category. The overall winner of the competition was the Jaguar XF.

Child-friendliness important

The cars were assessed on a wide range of criteria described as a "women-specific shopping-list". This includes parameters such as storage space, child-friendliness, design and driving pleasure. Acceleration and torque were also assessed, but were not among the top priorities. Climate impact was another factor.

The voting procedure and the competition itself were monitored by globally renowned auditing firm Grant Thornton. In order to qualify for this year's competition, the cars had to be sold in at least ten countries throughout the world and must have been available on the market between September 2008 and September 2009.

More details on the Volvo range of cars can be obtained from the Mohsin Haider Darwish LLC , by visiting their showrooms in Azaiba, Sur, Sohar & Salalah. An exclusive toll free number 800-74747 is also available for Volvo customers in the Sultanate of Oman.
